  2. measure the internal and external diameter of
  3. pipes. Some callipers are made like a pair of
  4. compasses, having two legs, often curved,
  5. pivoting about a screw at one end. The ends
  6. of the legs are placed in contact with the
  7. object to be measured, and the gap between
  8. the ends is then measured against a rule. The
  9. slide calliper looks like an adjustable
  10. spanner, and carries a scale for direct
  11. measuring, usually with a vernier scale for
  12. accuracy.
